Hey, if it'll cheer you up, I know people who've met Thompson. My history professor met the guy at McGill University in Montreal, where the good doctor was presenting a lecture. As the story goes, the McGill staff (my professor included) had drinks with him at the bar.

According to him, Thompson was "a drunken asshole with a brain so full of drugs brain matter was leaking out his ears. But he was an intelligent, thoughtful asshole."

I actually knew a guy who says he was a distant relative - and he called him up once and thompson was furious!
he claims thompson called him a "little shit don't waste my time" and hung up - dunno if it's true - but I have no reason to disbelieve the source - so it may very well have happened lol I imagine if I'd met him I would not have impressed him - although I would've been very impressed with him - even if he called me a little shit ;)
